Alberta's Indigenous communities face significant barriers to language revitalization, with many languages considered endangered due to the legacy of residential schools and cultural suppression. The loss of Indigenous languages has had a profound impact on Alberta's cultural heritage, with many communities struggling to preserve their linguistic identity. In Alberta, there are 64 distinct Indigenous languages spoken, but many are at risk due to the lack of fluent speakers and language documentation. Who faces these barriers? Indigenous communities, particularly those in rural and remote areas, where access to language education and resources is limited. Elders and language keepers are critical to language revitalization efforts, but often lack the necessary support and infrastructure to develop and deliver language programs. The grant funding available through this program will support the development of culturally sensitive language programs, focusing on equity and accessibility for Indigenous communities. Eligible projects will prioritize language documentation, language education, and cultural revitalization. Alberta's unique cultural context, with its rich Indigenous heritage, requires tailored approaches to language revitalization.
