Summary

This funding stream is available throughout Alberta and is intended for public‑use community facilities like sports arenas, cultural halls, playgrounds, heritage sites, and recreation centers. Grants range from $125,001 up to $1 million, designed to assist with building new facilities, purchasing existing ones, or renovating, expanding, or upgrading current infrastructure. The goal is to help strengthen community life, extend the lifespan of public assets, and stimulate local economic activity—whether through new construction, major retrofits, or essential upgrades to meet evolving community needs . Funding is granted on a matching basis, so recipients must secure and contribute the same amount as the grant, using sources like cash, donated materials, or volunteer labor.

Eligible organizations include established Alberta‑based non‑profit entities—such as community societies, Indigenous groups, libraries, societies, foundations under public health, or post‑secondary institutions—that are legally registered and in good standing, have operated for at least two years, and maintain local presence. Municipalities, individuals, and for‑profit bodies are not eligible

.

Applicants begin by submitting a brief Expression of Interest (EOI) by mid‑June, after which successful EOIs are invited to submit full applications by late July . Once awarded, projects must be finished within about 30 months of signing the grant agreement.

The intent of the funds is to support tangible, community‑oriented infrastructure projects—such as building new facilities, renovating old ones, improving accessibility, or adding public‑serving amenities—rather than covering ongoing operating costs.

In essence, this opportunity is ideal for well‑established nonprofit organizations in Alberta looking to embark on significant facility enhancements that will foster community engagement, bolster local services, and create long‑term value for residents.

Organizations and individuals based in Alberta who are engaged in Arts, Culture, History & Humanities may be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity. To discover more grants that align with your mission and objectives, visit The Grant Portal and explore listings using the Search Grant tool.
