Summary

Across Canada, a new funding opportunity supports community groups that help low-income individuals with free tax filing services. This program is intended to offset the costs incurred by organizations hosting tax-filing clinics—whether in-person or virtual—and is structured so that more involvement equals more support.

Eligible applicants are nonprofit or volunteer-based groups that are officially registered to participate in the national volunteer tax assistance program. Small community organizations, local charities, and grassroots groups working to fill gaps in access are very much encouraged to apply.

Funding is calculated using a combination of fixed base amounts and additional incentives. The base amount increases based on clinic volume—smaller clinics receive a modest sum, while higher-volume operations receive a larger base. On top of that, there are additional funds available for groups serving remote, northern, or Indigenous communities, plus a small per-return bonus that grows with the clinic’s output.

Applications open each spring and close late June, with funding awarded on a first-come, first-served basis within each region. The grant is being offered annually as part of a pilot program that has run for several years and continues to be renewed.

Benefits include not just financial support, but also legitimacy and visibility for your community service. Also, reporting and success metrics are shared publicly, demonstrating transparency and accountability.

By aligning with the program’s goals—namely, making tax filing accessible for people with modest means—volunteer organizations can secure valuable funding and expand their impact. If you'd like, I can help you map out an application timeline, estimate your potential grant amount based on clinic size, or draft an outline that matches your projected service model.
