Summary

A provincial grant opportunity supports municipal and community recycling efforts, offering funding to enhance infrastructure, collection, and processing systems. These programs are designed to build efficient resource recovery, reduce environmental impact, and bolster public stewardship of waste management.

Eligible applicants include municipalities, non-profit recycling organizations, and community-led groups operating within Alberta. Individuals and for-profit businesses generally do not qualify unless formally registered as part of an eligible nonprofit entity. The focus is on organized community efforts that align with existing material stewardship goals.

Funds may be used to support a variety of targeted recycling efforts, including municipal programs for household hazardous waste, tire recycling demonstration projects, and equipment acquisition for collection depots or mobile recycling units. Eligible expenses often include up to 50% of project costs—such as bins, safety signage, temporary storage structures, or collection vehicles.

Grants are typically awarded through multiple streams:

Municipal Roundup Grants – providing per-material stream funding (e.g., $1,000–$2,000 depending on type) to support household hazardous waste collection events or depot operations.
Equipment and Start‑Up Grants – support infrastructure needs ranging from small bins (~$3,000) to larger facilities (up to several million dollars), scaled to project complexity.

Application windows are tied to fiscal cycles and typically open annually or biennially, depending on program type. Some streams have ongoing intake for equipment funding, while targeted initiatives like tire demonstrations or hazardous collection events follow scheduled timelines for planning and rollout.

Grant awards are issued annually or per project cycle with varying amounts and timeframes. Recipients are often required to provide documentation of expenses and report on diversion outcomes.

This grant opportunity enables Alberta communities and regional partners to advance circular economy goals, enhance local recycling capacity, and encourage community participation in environmental stewardship.
