Art Collection Expansion Funding for Canadian Institutions in Alberta (Canada)
GrantID: 74936
Grant Funding Amount Low: Open
Deadline: Ongoing
Grant Amount High: Open
Summary
This grant supports individual artists (or small ensembles) based in Alberta by purchasing their completed work to include in a permanent, provincially held art collection. Applicants must meet residency requirements and certain eligibility criteria related to artistic practice. The grant is intended to expand the public collection, increase representation across various media (e.g. painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, new media, fibre art, ceramics, glass), and to ensure works are in good physical condition (original, non-reproductions, properly framed or mounted, archival where required).
Artists cannot be currently enrolled in a formal art‐training program (with some exceptions for self-directed work or artist residencies without formal instruction). Galleries or agents may submit on behalf of artists if the artist fulfills the core eligibility criteria, and there are special designation requirements for such submissions.
The funds are used to purchase artworks at fair market value. The selection process involves an expert panel; there are multiple stages including preliminary reviews (possibly in person), quality assessment, representation of gaps in media or genre, as well as condition and conservation potential. Successful applicants receive payment once the work is accepted into the collection following completion of requisite agreements and documentation.
This opportunity is available only in Alberta. It is for individual artists or artist ensembles—not for large incorporated businesses. It is not intended for nonprofit arts organizations to use as general operating support, nor is it available for commercial production or design work.
The dollar value per transaction depends on the fair market value of the artwork submitted; there is no fixed maximum stated in the description. The benefit lies in both compensation for the artist and inclusion in a public collection (visibility, prestige, permanent acquisition). The deadline for applications is April 1.
Eligible applicants in Alberta with a demonstrated commitment to Individual are encouraged to consider this funding opportunity. To identify additional grants aligned with your needs, visit The Grant Portal and utilize the Search Grant tool for tailored results.
