Alberta's Indigenous populations experience significant disparities in cancer incidence and outcomes. With a growing Indigenous population, the province faces a pressing need to address the unique needs of Indigenous cancer patients. Alberta's Indigenous communities are characterized by high rates of poverty, limited access to education and employment opportunities, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. The province's Indigenous populations are also more likely to experience late-stage cancer diagnoses and have lower survival rates compared to non-Indigenous populations. Establishing a research program focused on Indigenous cancer disparities in Alberta can help address these challenges. The program will incorporate traditional knowledge and community-based participatory research methods to develop culturally sensitive cancer prevention and treatment strategies. ## Indigenous Cancer Research in Alberta ## The research program will prioritize the needs of Indigenous communities, including the development of research protocols that respect Indigenous cultural values and practices. By supporting Indigenous cancer research in Alberta, the province can improve the health outcomes of its Indigenous populations and reduce the disparities in cancer care. Unlike neighboring provinces, Alberta has a unique history of Indigenous-settler relations, which has shaped the province's healthcare infrastructure and research landscape. Alberta's research institutions will need to demonstrate their ability to work in partnership with Indigenous communities and incorporate Indigenous knowledge into research design.
